How to Apply a Vinyl Decal Without Bubbles
A vinyl decal only looks as good as the way it goes on. The good news is that a clean, straight, bubble free application takes about five minutes and nothing more than a cloth, some rubbing alcohol and a card with a straight edge.
What you need
- Isopropyl rubbing alcohol and a soft, lint free cloth
- A plastic card with a straight edge, like an old gift card
- Masking or painter's tape
- A measuring tape if you want the decal perfectly centred
Pick the right conditions
Adhesive bonds best on a surface that is neither cold nor hot. Aim for a shaded spot and a surface temperature roughly between 10 and 30 degrees Celsius. In winter, apply indoors or in a warm garage. In summer, avoid glass that has been sitting in direct sun.
Step by step
- Clean the surface with rubbing alcohol and let it dry completely. Soap, wax and glass cleaners can leave a film that stops the adhesive from gripping.
- Hold the decal in place and decide on the exact position. Run a strip of tape across the middle of the decal to create a hinge.
- Lift one half of the decal on the hinge and peel the backing paper away from that half, keeping the sticky side from touching anything.
- Lower that half onto the surface and press it down from the hinge outward with your card, using firm overlapping strokes.
- Remove the hinge tape, then repeat with the other half: peel the backing, lower it, press from the centre out.
- Go over the whole design one more time with firm pressure, then peel the top clear layer back slowly at a sharp angle, close to the surface. If any piece lifts with it, lay it back down and press again before continuing.
Fixing a bubble
Small bubbles often disappear on their own within a few days of sun. For a stubborn one, prick it with the tip of a pin and press the air out toward the hole.
Let it settle
The adhesive keeps building strength for a few days. Wait about three days before a car wash, heavy scrubbing or scraping ice near the decal.
